I may have to check that out. If you get hooked, you might try a trip in mid March starting from LA going northbound along the coast watching the Grey Whale migration with mamas and the babies all the way through Washington. Lots of circling bubble fishing! The relatively large size, black dorsal color, orange ventral color and small plates showing on the dorsal side all say, "Black Katy Chiton" -- Katherina tunicata. There's nothing else like it in the Salish Sea. A good reference: Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest, Andy Lamb & Bernard P. Hanby, 2005. Harbour Publishing, Vancouver, B.C. I am curious if you used a reference site or guide to determine it was a Black Katy Chiton. My "National Audubon - Field Guide to the PNW" does not list a Black Katy as an option so I am wondering if there is another source I should be referencing. The primary field mark is that the tips of the primaries are the same color as the mantle, both being a fairly pale gray. It is eating a chiton, I believe a Black katy chiton, Katharina tunicata.
