You inspired me to look at more Merlin photos and I do see similar markings although I am surprised at the amount of variation from one bird to the next. Under Odds and Ends I will add an old (also rather poor) photo I just found that also shows the same markings on a Merlin.Larry Hubbellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11346591926338103362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7340068615976654326.post-47887870254547468822012-09-04T12:08:52.326-07:002012-09-04T12:08:52.326-07:00Larry, this is a photo I took of a female Merlin i...Larry, this is a photo I took of a female Merlin in that area of the Arboretum, a couple of years ago, a bit different coloration: http://www.flickr.com/photos/taylar/5063924471/lightbox/. But your image looks a lot like this Merlin: http://www.greglasley.net/merlin.htmlingridhttp://www.thefreequark.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7340068615976654326.post-71553361595612939522012-09-04T06:38:25.702-07:002012-09-04T06:38:25.702-07:00Thank you! It flew about 20 feet away when the Merlin landed nearby but it did not actually leave the clump of cottonwoods. I wonder if the Merlin was actually surprised to find the PW in the tree. The Merlin did not linger long.
(No, I did not see anymore of the Merlin than what is in the photo. My attention was divided between trying to get photos of both birds.)
Thanks again for your thoughts.Larry Hubbellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11346591926338103362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7340068615976654326.post-17457605572091995412012-09-04T00:51:36.688-07:002012-09-04T00:51:36.688-07:00I think your bird of prey is a Merlin - did you ge...I think your bird of prey is a Merlin - did you get any look at the top sides of it? Notice the featherage stuck to its beak? It must have just preyed upon or tried to prey upon, a small bird - the woodpecker is not likely in much danger from this little falcon.
Nice little sequence with the Pileated Woodpecker.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
